New Wave – Sam Gellaitry

Sam Gellaitry shows off his beautiful voice in this new single, New Wave. He has a great countertenor voice, his high notes are always perfectly in-tune and he makes use of them in this song. The harmonies are very inspiring – as in alluring – and the vibe is a little defiant, a little lost, the rhythm is fast but easy to follow, and it is animated contrasting the lyrics about confusion and being unsure of what direction to follow when there seem to be distractors. It also talks about self-awareness, self-respect, forgiving oneself, it addresses mental health and how you treat yourself in such dark times. Sam is taking a new turn in his music lately, not only in his sound, but his lyrics have become more thoughtful and wistful, pondering on life and decisions, making allusions to God. New Wave talks about feeling used, isolated, and unseen even though you are surrounded by lights of all kinds, but they only seem to pass through you. It talks about the weight of that loneliness, how it is “taking its toll”.
The song also talks about how, once you have taken a choice on something, you cannot take it back. You can’t let yourself be influenced by what surrounds you, no matter how appealing it might look. Not all that glitters…
Still, in New Wave, Sam mentions healing too, the love that makes you realize the error in your ways. That makes you aware of what you have been putting yourself through and that you are not in a good place, you need help in order to reach that love that is now with you. It’s a song about heartbreak and uprising, about confusion and rebellion, and above all about standing up and caring for yourself. You are responsible for all the decisions you make.
