Jazmine’s "Heaux Tales"

It's been one week since Jazmine Sullivan released her latest project, Heaux Tales, and it still sounds just as beautiful as the first time I heard it. When she was trying to decide on the direction for the project, Sullivan's A&R and label suggested she do a concept album. "I went home and brainstormed. I thought about the conversations I have with my girlfriends, my mom, different people like that, and Heaux Tales came up", says Sullivan in an interview with Vulture. While "Heaux Tales" is fourteen tracks long, it presents more as an EP as six of the records serve as interludes.

The six "heaux tales" are personal stories/monologues from friends and family in Sullivan's life. One of the most notable stories comes from the one and only Ari Lennox. On track four, Ari's Tale, Ari recounts a time in her life of being sprung – so infatuated with one person that you almost feel you have no control over your attraction to said person.

"Heaux Tales" is a honest, vulnerable, refreshing, and powerful project from the talent R&B singer. Each song and tale speaks to something that you can relate to. I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that while men can – and should – enjoy this project, this EP is speaking directly to womxn.
